If you’re not already aware of this, Soroush Ghaderi, the long-time owner of Mama’s Royal Cafe has purchased and is now operating Shakewell. We’re delighted to share his heartfelt message:

It is with great enthusiasm and a deep sense of responsibility that I greet you as the new owner of Shakewell. Some of you may know that I am also the owner of another Oakland institution, Mama’s Royal Cafe, on Broadway.

As we begin this journey together, I want to extend my appreciation to Tim for trusting me to continue Shakewell’s legacy. It was crucial to Tim to find someone who shared his love for the restaurant and was committed to preserving its uniqueness. I am honored to be that person.

I want to assure you that Shakewell isn’t going anywhere. It will remain the vibrant, soulful oasis you’ve come to know and love. The same familiar faces will continue to welcome you, and Chef Holly’s culinary artistry will delight your palate just as it always has. My mission is clear: To pay homage to Shakewell’s rich heritage and culture.

I would like to emphasize my enduring commitment to the LGBTQ+ community. I understand the significance of this space and the importance of fostering an environment where everyone can be their authentic selves. Shakewell will continue to stand as a symbol of love, acceptance, and unity.

Our beloved Oakland community, with its kaleidoscope of cultures and backgrounds, is at the core of Shakewell’s identity. We are dedicated to celebrating this diversity, not only through our food but also by providing a warm and inclusive atmosphere that reflects the heart of Oakland.

Thank you to all of you who have supported Shakewell through the years. I invite you to join me in embracing this transition. Your presence, your stories, and your laughter are what make Shakewell come alive. Down the block, Maribel was one four women-owned vintage clothing stores featured in an excellent article in this excellent Oaklandside article.

Around the corner, Vegan Mob, after a hugely successful run on Lake Park, has closed as long planned. According to this excellent article in SF Gate by Amanda Bartlett, they now have a smaller location in SF and a much larger location being planned for Santa Rosa. In the future, you may also be able to pick up your favorites in Safeway and Whole Foods refrigerated cases.

As for what I still call the Kwik Way building, it’s going to be demolished once all the needed funding is on hand for a mixed-use development with approximately fifty units of much-needed affordable housing. The property is now owned by the Oakland Housing Authority but EAH Housing will be supervising construction and managing the building once completed.
