GRAND AVENUE, WEST OF 580 – November 2016

CA Document Preparers new siteCA Document Preparers moves next door

In our April 2014 column, we learned that California Document Preparers is a business  that guides people through complicated, sometimes confusing, legal documents and filings. While it provides licensed and bonded legal document assistants;ce,  it does not provide legal advice or practice law.

Founder Ian Duncan and his team provide a high level of customer service and are committed to providing affordable access to the justice system for those seeking uncontested legal services. Ian says, “It’s been a great way to meet our neighbors. Word of mouth has been tremendous for us, and we know that we’re making a positive impact in our community because we hear it every day.”

The business team can act as your own personal assistant preparing and filing documents, saving you time, frustration and money. As an example, California Document Preparers can help you create a trust for $700 fee instead of $3000. Staff take pride in providing attorney-approved information to customers and excellent customer service. If they are not qualified to help, they will refer you to other resources.

Total employment has nearly doubled since 2014, growing from four to seven. To accommodate the growth generated by this service in the community, the business will move from the street level corner of Grand Avenue and Park View Terrace into a much larger space in the building next door. Do not let the staircase leading to a red door at the front of its new location intimidate you. California Document Preparers will not move into its new location until it is fully accessible to the handicapped. A designated handicapperd parking space will be available at the rear of the building adjacent to an accessible entryway.

Knowing that Ian and his husband and co-founder, Corey Priest, are huge Star Trek aficionados, we suggest that this enterprise’s move has proceeded rapidly, but not at warp speed. The move was initially expected to be completed by October 15. The new move-in date is November 15, 2016. Meanwhile, California Document Preparers continue to serve the community at its original corner location.

Preview: Watch for more info about the new neighborhood enterprise expected to occupy this corner coming early in 2017: Lagree Method Studio, a Pilates-based fitness center.

Brian-Kappy-Pearly at new Spokes boutique in Berkeley

Our column in December 2015  introduced Brian Drayton and his wife, Pearly Tan, who had just opened the Oakland SPOKES Bike Lounge & the Family Bike Collective (FBC) at 366 Grand Ave in November 2015. Unfortunately Spokes encountered conflicts with Eui Kang, the building’s landlord, that escalated last summer. Brian and Pearly urge any potential tenants to carefully research the property and permit history prior to considering leasing. They said they were sad to leave the Adams Point neighborhood, but hoped to see all their customers again at their two new Berkeley locations.

In September, Brian and Pearly opened Spokes Bike Lounge at 1409 Martin Luther King Jr Way, Berkeley, a full-service bike shop that does tune-ups, repairs and services alongside retail sales. The store’s website  describes a wide array of “Quick Fix-ins” as well as Basic Service, Full Service, and Full Overhaul Service packages.

Then in October, Spokes opened the Spokes Bike Boutique three blocks away, in the heart of Gourmet Ghetto at 1506 Walnut St., Berkeley. The boutique will stock high-end products and provide items pre-ordered by pro riders and teams. Here racing teams can talk to staff about consigning shelves for items exclusively for their team members, and bike groups can get bulk purchase discounts. The boutique will also provide basic on-the-spot adjustments when possible for riders commuting in the area and for rides starting nearby.
