Odds and Ends

2020 December, Odds and Ends · November 28, 2020

  • For the July 2017 Splash Pad News, Margo Rosenbaum, then a student at Piedmont High, penned this wonderful article about Colonial Donuts. It was so well written, we could have predicted that a great career would follow. Sure enough, she’s now Managing Editor of The Aggie at UC Davis. Here’s a sample of her recent work – an article about the annual Beer for a Butterfly Contest.
  • The last couple of years, we’ve been waxing poetic (pun intended) about the annual Oakland Youth Poet Laureate contest. The application process for this coming year opens January 1. Oakland residents ages 13–18 are invited to participate.
  • One of the many ways in which you can help support our independently owned Grand Lake neighborhood businesses is by participating in the East Bay Express “Best of the East Bay Poll.” Deadline is December 20.
  • In preparation for its 60th Anniversary in two years, the Oakland-Fukuoka Sister City Association is holding a holiday wreath fundraiser in partnership with J. Miller Flowers and Gifts. Orders must be placed and paid for no later than this Friday, December 4. You can view the wreaths that are available and place your order on this link.
  • The Bookmark Bookstore at 721 Washington Street raises funds to support the Oakland Public Library. Sale discount is 20% for the general public or become a Member of Friends of the OPL and get 50% off all purchases during the sale. And more good news! Donations are being accepted again, but you need to make a reservation to drop them off.  More info about the sale and the Friends of the Oakland Public Library Advocates Mixer on December 6 is available at THIS LINK.
