Lakeview Library Happenings
The Lakeview Branch Library is a great resource for our neighborhood. This article is for those (few?) in the neighborhood who might be unaware of the cool things happening there.
Lakeview is open 5 days a week: Tuesday: 12:30 pm – 8:00 pm; Wednesday: 10:00 am – 5:30 pm; Thursday: 10:00 am – 5:30 pm; Friday: 12:00 pm – 5:30 pm; and Saturday: 10:00 am – 5:30 pm (unfortunately, closed Sunday and Monday).
I met the Branch Librarian, Michelle Rosenthal, to get some information about the various events there. She told me that they frequently feature works of local artists. On display through January 31, some paintings by Rad Sanza, who has worked at Lakeview as a library aide for 11 years. If you are a local artist who is interested in having your art displayed, contact Michelle at firstname.lastname@example.org.
For current and prospective fiction writers, bloggers, memoirists or poets, there will be a panel of three published authors, Laurie Ann Doyle, Lily Iona MacKenzie, and Lori Ostlund, on Saturday January 13, at 3 pm. They will discuss their path to publication and give advice on how to be published. More information about these authors is available via this link.
There is a Lakeview Branch Friends Group (www.lakeviewfriends.org), whose president is Victoria Barbero. They raise money for the Branch by selling donated books acquired from patrons or from re-donations of books donated to The Bookmark Bookstore, 721 Washington St., which is run by the Friends of the OPL. The Bookmark provides about 6-8 boxes of books to the Lakeview Friends every 6 weeks, mostly Fiction, Mystery, and Children’s Picture Books, categories which sell well. The Lakeview Friends group also maintains the flower gardens around the building. They meet the first Saturday of every month at 11:30 am, and new volunteers are always welcome.
There are weekly or monthly events, including Chess Club (1-4 pm, 3rd Saturday of every month), a Knitting Group (3:30-5 pm, every Thursday), STEM (Science) Fun led by the Children’s librarian (every Tuesday from 4:30-5:30 pm), Lego Club (3-5 pm, 3rd Friday of every month), and several Storytime Options (Toddler Time – Wednesdays, 10:10 am, Baby Bounce – Wednesdays, 11 am, and Family Storytime – Saturdays at 10:30 am).
If you have not yet visited the Branch, check it out!
