Feet on the Street
Starting about seven years ago, a small, but dedicated group of neighbors has been walking the Cleveland Heights Neighborhood to encourage better lighting of properties. Weather permitting, the “Feet on the Street” group meets the first Wednesday of the month, from September until May. The walks, which last an hour or so, begin around 7:30 p.m., in front of the pizza parlor Leaning Tower of Haddon Hill, at 498 Wesley Avenue. We choose from four fliers that we place on front porches – one that compliments properties with excellent outdoor lighting; a second we term “tweener”, for houses that have some lighting, but could use more; a third for motion detectors – better than no lights at all, but they leave the area mostly dark, and cost more than low-wattage lights with a timer for dusk-to-dawn lighting; and the fourth for the really dark properties, suggesting that some lighting is needed for the porch and side yards! We also notice and report street lights that are out, and other safety/blight issues.
Announcements about the monthly walks are given through the Cleveland Heights Yahoo Group. To join, click on THIS LINK, and then click the “Join this group” button.
Cleveland Heights neighbors and dogs on leash are always welcome to join our walks. We also encourage other neighborhoods in the Splash Pad News area to start their own “Feet on the Street” program as a great way to get exercise, meet your neighbors, and make your neighborhood safer.
EDITOR’S NOTE: If you’d like to launch a similar walking group and aren’t already part of a neighborhood network, send an email to info@splashpad.sitedistrict.com and we’ll try to hook you up with like-minded individuals.
