Hi Neighbors and happy birthday to the “Grand Avenue, West of 580” blog that turned 2 years old at the end of June. Thank you for your readership and occasional comments. This summer I am providing updates on the progress of plans previously noted, other changes on Grand Ave., west of 580, and activities at Lake Merritt Park. – LZ.
Bites at the Lake
On Feb. 15, 2015, Karen Hester launched Bites at the Lake in the Lakeview Library parking lot (between Lakeshore & Grand Ave.). While soccer teams play at Astro Park and parents supervise their 2 to 5 year-olds enjoying the play structure, a rotating series of food trucks serve park visitors every Sunday from noon to 3 pm, in sunshine or light drizzle. (If we ever get a real downpour on a Sunday afternoon, consider visiting anyway to perform an anti-drought happy dance in the lot, with or without food trucks.) The nearby park restrooms are open for your comfort needs.
Food truck vendors differ each week and are announced on Bites at the Lake’s Facebook and Twitter accounts. Muncha India is the newest addition to the Bites at the Lake rotation. Food fare has included Curbside Creamery, Cassave Taqueria, Burnt Ends BBQ, Beulah’s Bean truck (serving espresso, not pinto or Navy beans), Bombzies BBQ Rice Bowls, Go Streatery, Fat Man BBQ, No Worries, Liba Falafel, Fist of Flour, Nora’s Spanish Mobile Cuisine, Doc’s of the Bay, Sunrise Deli, Kenny’s Heart and Soul, and NoNo Burger.
Karen, who also curates Bites Off Broadway, says, “I am looking for more Asian food and trying to get a Burmese wagon.” She is planning some special themes at Bites at the Lake this summer, like “Wellness Day” including yoga, acupuncture, chiropractic services, and trucks featuring healthy specials. If you come, please walk or park for free under the highway or on the street. The library parking lot is closed to through traffic on Sundays to accommodate this neighborhood event.
Remember that the Oakland Municipal Band opens its 104th season of free free summer concerts on Saturday, July 4. The 35-piece professional band will also perform on four Sundays this summer: July 12, 19, 26 and August 2. Each performance is from 1:00 to 3:00 pm in the marble and limestone Edoff Memorial Bandstand, located just past Children’s Fairyland at Lake Merritt Park. This year, the benches are gone so bring a blanket or lawn chairs. Some folding seats are provided for seniors. (See this blog’s July 2014 column for more information.)
Following a 2-year expansion and relocation project, The Working Body (see this blog’s Jan. 2015 column) has opened at its new location, 399 Grand Ave. Along with high quality equipment, the new location features beautiful stonework in the entryway, large windows and a skylight for natural lighting, the original 1927 fir wood floor, and a reception desk made from a repurposed redwood barn door found at the site. Mention the Grand Avenue West of 580 blog and receive a 20% discount on group classes this summer.
Finally, the sign in the window at Ahn’s Quarter Pound Burger, 439 Grand Ave., (damaged by accidental fire early on Feb. 11, 2015) has been updated to say, “REPAIR in PROCESS. See You Soon”. Watch this space for more news when Ahn’s is ready to open again.
