On Grand Ave., West of 580
Hello, Neighbors! Watch this space for monthly news and notes about tasty gems, handy services, art, and changes on Grand Ave., west of 580. — LZ.
The 4-year-old Grand Lake Coffee House (440 Grand Ave., corner of Bellevue) is the place to go for coffee (or tea) with no corporate aftertaste. This place has grown organically (all puns intended) to serve the neighborhood. Most people arrive on foot because the only parking is at meters on the street.
Staff acknowledge everyone warmly (often by name) and patiently guide the undecided through an array of menu choices. Recommendations include the Turkey Melt, Italian Ice Cream Shake, Veggie Smoothie, and Salted Carmel Mocha. In April, Grand Lake added the much-acclaimed Tara’s organic ice cream and agave-sweetened sorbet. (Beat the heat with a Jasmine Green Tea ice cream cone!)
Plan an unhurried breakfast meeting (open at 7:30 weekdays, 8:30 weekends). Telecommute (free Wi-fi). Write that novel at a counter seat along windows facing Bellevue and Grand. Collaborate with your committee in overstuffed chairs or at a large table. People watch at outdoor café tables and benches. Or rent the whole space for an event.
** Special shout-out to Anne Woodell and the Oakland Municipal Band! Remember free OMB concerts outdoors at the Bandstand in Lake Merritt Park, July 4, and Sundays, July 14, 21, 28 and Aug. 4, 1 PM – 3 PM. Bring a lawn chair and picnic. **
