Splash Pad Volunteer Work Day
Our “Nacho Libre” volunteer workday on Sunday, August 13, was quite productive. Several planting beds were thoroughly weeded and the Dogwood behind the fountain wall was pruned as well. Kudos to That Man Fantastic for helping solicit volunteers and to Annalee Allen for her very nice column in the Oakland Tribune. Volunteers were very well fed thanks to the generosity of Noahs’ Bagels and the following Farmers’ Market vendors: Eddie Chavez from EGB Farms, Panorama Bakery, Tip-Top Farms, Live Oak Farms and J & J Farms. Check out the photos of all the enthusiastic and hard-working volunteers: Joan Bricker, Orr Kahey, Larry Johnson (visiting from Thousand Oaks), David Bolanos, John and Romer Stevenson, Gordon Shell and Charles Hahn. We have a few Nacho Libre posters remaining. If you email us, we will set one aside for you at the next volunteer day.
Farmers’ Market News
Welcome to our newest vendor, Marita’s Sweet Potato Pie Company which bills itself as the home of the Red Velvet Cake. They are based in San Leandro and have been baking delicious cakes, pies and cobblers since 1988.
Entertainment this week will be provided by the Hawk Johnson Band which plays a lively mixture of jazz, blues and spirituals. The group is led by Frank Johnson with Anthony Atherton on horn and also featuring John “Barbecue” Thomas.
Sistahs Steppin’ in Pride Dyke March and Festival
The Sistahs Steppin’ in Pride East Bay Dyke March and Festival is being held this Saturday, August 26. The march, which will include a Dykes on Bikes contingent, begins at Noon at the Pergola on the north end of the lake and will circle around the perimeter of the Farmers’ Market on Lake Park Avenue. March ends at Snow Park where a big Festival with lots of entertainment is scheduled.
Unveiling of Cleveland Cascade Master Plan
Everyone is invited to preview the unveiling of the Master Plan for the restoration of the Cleveland Cascade on Monday, August 28th, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Lakeview Branch Library. If you haven’t visited their wonderful website lately, do so. The three part video filmed by The Organic City is absolutely delightful.
Lakeshore Avenue
Although there were temporarily quite a few empty retail spaces on Lakeshore, they are filling rapidly. The biggest news is that the owners of Luka’s Tap Lounge will be opening a wine bar in what was previously the Frame Shop next to Starbucks.
Hearing Regarding The Serenader’s Cabaret License
On Thursday, August 31 at 3:00 PM in Hearing Room 2 in Oakland’s City Hall, a hearing will take place to determine whether the Serenader’s cabaret license will be renewed. The current license addresses issues that include acceptable noise levels, litter, security, parking, smoking restrictions, operating hours and loitering. Also under consideration will be a request from the management for permission to begin hosting live entertainment one additional evening per week.
All interested parties are invited to speak at the hearing on the 31st. If you can’t attend, comments should be directed in advance of the meeting to Hearing Officer, Barbara Killey at bkilley@oaklandnet.com or phone 238-2257.
Helen Krayenhoff Watercolor Show
Helen is best known to most of us as one half of the dynamic duo that sells plants (particularly tomatoes, herbs and other vegetables) at the Grand Lake Farmers’ Market under the name, Kassenhoff Growers. It turns out that Helen is also a fabulous watercolor artist judging by the Magnolia grandiflora on her invitation. Giclee prints of her artwork will be on display at the Sweet Adeline Bakeshop (3350 Adeline) from August 26 to October 13 with a reception scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, September 10.
